So much of our family history is found in photographs, letters and books that have been passed down from generation to generation. It's very important to properly save and preserve these documents for the future. These activities are designed to help you maintain a proper environment (from humidity and temperature control to protection from light), use safe handling practices (such as gloves), store your materials safely, and begin using conservation practices to protect your written history.

Many thanks to our partners at the Wisconsin Historical Society's Wisconsin Conservation Service Center for these preservation materials. For more help, you can contact them at (608) 264-6476.

More information on preserving your artifacts
Staff from the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Veterans Museum can provide information on preserving your own historic photographs, documents and artifacts. Contact us for more information.

Donating to archives
For those interested in donating items, read more about how to choose the right archives.

Both the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center provide information about donating to military collections.
