What is Quilt Expo?

Did you know that it takes more than 500 volunteers to produce a successful expo? Whether you are an experienced quilter or would like to support Wisconsin Public Television by lending a hand, we have the perfect job waiting for you. Quilters and non-quilters are welcome! * = Seated Job. All other jobs involve standing/walking.
Greeter:* Be on the welcoming committee! Direct attendees to entry gates, ticket booths, the quilt exhibit, etc. and answer basic questions about the show. Greeters at certain stations will be able to sit. Handstamper:* Thank guests for coming, answer visitors' questions and stamp hands for those who plan to reenter the show. Information Desk:* Give directions and answer other questions about Quilt Expo using information sheets we provide. Floater: Fill in where needed in the event that another volunteer needs to cancel - lots of fun if you enjoy versatility. Lecture Assistant: Collect tickets, assist lecture presenters as needed, lower/raise lights, direct attendees to the correct lecture rooms. Main Stage Presentation Assistant: Assist presenters as needed with setup, cleanup, distributing handouts, etc. Package Check: Check and retrieve attendee packages. Photography Assistant: Help move and hang quilts during the photography session on Wednesday, September 7. Quilt Appraisal Assistant: Manage traffic at the quilt appraisal room and assist the appraiser in handling quilts.
Quilt Exhibit Docent: Stationed in the quilt exhibit, docents help visitors see the reverse sides of quilts (with the help of white gloves) and tell a little more about the work on display using fact sheets we provide. Work at your own comfort level, quilting experience is not necessary. Quilt Exhibit Security: Help us keep an eye on quilts while exhibit setup and take down are in progress. Quilt Exhibit Take Down: Assist in taking down quilts with care after the show. This is a very physical job, as we'll be handling more than 300 quilts. Take down will take place after the show Saturday, Sept. 8. Quilt Finishing Team: Straighten quilts after they have been hung, hang quilt ID, and assist where needed. Quilt Hanging Crew: Assist in hanging quilts with care before the show. This is a very physical job as we'll be handling over 300 quilts! Quilt Unbundling Team: Unbundled and deliver quilts to hanging locations and assist where needed. Rope & Pipe Team: Hang row identification signs, wipe down pipe, deliver pipe and S-hooks to quilt hanging location and assist where needed. Special Event Host: Greet visitors, collect tickets and serve as an usher at one or both of our special evening events. Special events will take place 5:15-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 and Friday, Sept. 7. Ticket Sales:* Sell tickets in the front or back lobby of the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center. You must be able to accurately add and quickly make change. Vendor Check-In:* Help greet and check in vendors during setup on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Volunteer Check-In:* Greet volunteers, hand them their name badges and direct them to training areas in our volunteer lounge. Will-Call Desk: Assist attendees with picking up tickets purchased in advance for Quilt Expo Wheelchair Rental Check-In: Work with UW Health to check-in rented wheelchairs and process paperwork. Workshop Assistant: (Includes Sit & Sew Workshops) Collect tickets and assist instructors as needed during a workshop. Experience with sewing machines or hand sewing is a plus. |
As a thank you for volunteering, we'll provide you with a ticket to the show and a parking pass. You also will get to check out stage presentations and 85,000-square-foot shopping mall. When and where is Quilt Expo?Our next expo will run Sept. 6-8, 2012 with set-up on Sept. 5 in the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. What type of time commitment is involved?Volunteer shifts range from 2-4 hours depending on the position. What is the minimum age to volunteer?The minimum age to volunteer at Quilt Expo is 16. |

Quilt Expo is an educational and community fundraising event presented by Wisconsin Public Television and Nancy Zieman Productions. Attendees can connect with their creative muse by participating in sewing workshops, lectures and stage presentations. See an artist's creativity turned into a beautiful quilt by walking through our juried quilt exhibit. And don't forget to bring your walking shoes as guests can shop their way through a 85,000-square-foot vendor mall!
