Celebrate the arrival of Earth Day with exciting environmental programming on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT). Tuesday, April 20, tune in to WPT for a night of programming exploring the planet's population trends and successful new conservation efforts.

The evening begins with Nova 'World in the Balance' at 7 p.m. The human population first reached the one billion mark in 1804. Today, a billion new people are added every dozen years. Learn why developing nations are experiencing a baby boom while birth rates in industrialized nations continue to rapidly fall. Hear personal stories from India, Japan, Kenya and China as

Nova delves into the character of the 21st century's global family, now numbering 6.3 billion and projected to increase to nearly 9 billion by 2050. Examine these and other population trends affecting the delicate balance between the Earth and its inhabitants.

The focus shifts from human populations to endangered species as Earth Day programming on WPT continues with Conservation Pathfinders: Blueprints for the Land at 9 p.m. Discover how economics and a new land ethic succeed in saving wildlife around the globe. Visit a Madison foundation working well beyond its local address to positively impact global conservation.

In 2004, WPT celebrates 50 years of service to Wisconsin individuals and families. WHA-TV, Madison, signed on the air on May 3, 1954.
