The gavel came down on the 29th annual WHA-TV Auction earlier this week and organizers report a highly successful event.

'We are grateful to so many people who help make Auction possible,' said Kelly Joerres, Auction manager. 'The event would never come off without the invaluable volunteers, artists, business donors and business underwriters who support public broadcasting.'

The WHA-TV Auction generated more than $470,000 for educational and entertaining programming, and engaging community activities throughout the state. The event is sponsored by Friends of WHA-TV, the non-profit fund-raising arm for Wisconsin Public Television.

More than 1,700 volunteers were a part of the live, televised six-day event. The youngest volunteers were the bid runners who move bids around the crowded and busy television set, and the young auctioneers who led the action for the Kid's Corner Auction on Saturday afternoon, June 5.

Each year, the WHA-TV Auction showcases outstanding Wisconsin businesses and artists who donate goods and services, such as home appliances, trips, one-of-a-kind art pieces, recreational equipment and more.

In 2004, WPT celebrates 50 years of service to Wisconsin individuals and families. WHA-TV, Madison, signed on the air on May 3, 1954.

WPT is a service of the Educational Communications Board and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.
