Parenting Counts!
The goal of these workshops is to help parents and child-care providers understand what's really going on in their child's development, promoting more effective parenting and caregiver techniques. Topics covered include imitative behavior, testing limits, tantrums and making sure we understand our own emotions before disciplining our children.

Taming
the Tube
Using video clips from PBS Kids programs, we'll teach parents to encourage their kids to become more selective and active television viewers. When you create a "learning triangle," you combine active viewing with reading, and activities to give children a bigger picture of stories and themes presented on TV.
Television and Literacy
Use the power of television to help teach early and emergent literacy skills! This workshop helps identify episodes of Sesame Street, Between the Lions, and Arthur that can open a world of reading for both English- and Spanish-speaking families.
Healthy Kids, Active Viewers
With childhood obesity reaching epic proportions, many experts point to TV as the culprit. While it's true that sedentary kids spend more time zoning out in front of the TV, parents and educators can work together to create a healthier attitude toward television and food! This workshop is full of valuable information to help adults understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle for the whole child.
Smarter Spending After Saturday Morning
After a typical lineup of weekend cartoons, your kids have been exposed to hundreds of commercial messages -- junk food, action figures, trendy stuff they've just GOT to have! Get the inside scoop on strategies advertisers use to target kids and how you can use the very same tricks to empower kids to resist the "must have" mentality. Help them to watch TV with a critical eye, saving their allowances and shopping smarter when they do decide to spend their money, not when commercials tell them to BUY NOW!
