“We were looking to shoot a picture of one of the posted advisories. We went to at least five locations; we were told they could be found. None was to be found.”
“Blue Wave Beach” Shoot
We shot this story in the full heat of the summer. Of course, because we were on the job, we were dressed totally inappropriately for summertime at the beach. I was in a suit. The photographer and sound people wore pants, as well. I kicked off my shoes to make my way through the sand more efficiently, but the sand was so hot I had to move pretty fast!

Even though we couldn’t enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed, I was very impressed by the beach. I kept thinking I would want to bring my family there (North Beach) to swim and play.
It’s very big and clean and has a huge playground right next to it. When we were in Racine we were referred to a downtown restaurant that’s out of the 1950’s. They serve malts and burgers and fries. You can get all three for under $4! That stop made the crew happy.
“Polluted Fishing” Shoot
One interesting sidelight from shooting this story was trying in vain to find the fish advisory posters that the DNR puts up at all the public fishing spots along the Sheboygan River.
Our story was focusing on the PCB pollution in the river (that empties into Lake Michigan) and how the resident species of fish in it are not considered safe to eat. We were looking to shoot a picture of one of the posted advisories. We went to at least five locations; we were told they could be found. None was to be found.
We asked DNR officials about it and they said sometimes people pull them down, but nonetheless seemed surprised none was posted. Shortly thereafter, the officials replaced the posted advisories and told us they made them more permanent.
