Activities
After
viewing Beyond the Butterfly, meet in small groups and choose
one or more topics to focus on. You may want to review the quotes from
some of the girls that are included in the guide as well. Discuss the
following questions.
- Is
the group's experience regarding the chosen topic the same as the
girls' in the video?
- If
the group's experience is different, explain how.
- What
other information and comments can your group add about this topic?
- What
can your group do to change or prevent some of these situations from
continuing? Come up with a plan and try to implement it.
- Discuss
strategies for coping with these issues if they arise in the lives
of group members or for one of their friends.
- If
boys are included in the discussion, do their experiences, ideas and
comments differ from those of the girls? If so, explore and discuss
these differences.
- If
your group discusses school as one of their topics, explore the concepts
that boys participate more freely in class than girls and that boys
are better in math and science than girls. Are these ideas consistent
with the group's experiences? Discuss how they are or are not.
- If
your group feels that girls and boys have different experiences and
feelings regarding the issues covered in the video, discuss these
differences.
- Have
girls role-play what they feel boys experience and have boys role-play
their perception of what girls experience. Did the role-plays appear
to be accurate to members of the group? What did your group discover
as a result of these role-plays?
- At
the conclusion of your discussion, talk about what group members feel
they've gained from this experience and how Beyond the Butterfly
has impacted them.
- Finally,
let us know what you and your group think about Beyond the Butterfly!
