Before showing Beyond the Butterfly to your group, we recommend that you completely familiarize yourself with both the video and this manual. The guide is designed to support the video by providing additional information. Written to closely approximate the topic flow of the video, the manual includes information about puberty, body image, boy-girl relationships, school, family, friends, discrimination, smoking, alcohol and drugs, self-injury, depression, suicide and words of advice from some of the girls participating in the project. When viewing Beyond the Butterfly, you will notice that topics are separated from one another by "Who Am I?" segments. Please feel free to stop the video either before or after these segments if you want to have a discussion about the topic(s) just covered. The natural breaks in the video introduced by the "Who Am I?" sections will also facilitate the use of Beyond the Butterfly over more than one class period, we understand that viewing an hour-long video and following it with discussion is nearly an impossibility with today's time constraints. In fact, we recommend that you use only selected parts of the program at a time. Due to the potentially upsetting content of Beyond the Butterfly, we also ask that you encourage the members of your group to feel free to speak to you if anything in the video disturbs them. The Beyond the Butterfly teacher's guide also includes suggested activities that can be adapted to your specific needs, as well as a resource list, recommended reading and web sites of interest. A complete copy of the script is also included.
Beyond the Butterfly is co-produced by Wisconsin Public Television and NEWIST/CESA #7 (Northeastern Wisconsin In-School Telecommunications). |
