Scott Simmons
Scott Simmons decided to indulge his fascination with glass by taking courses
in University of Wisconsin's glass art program during the early 1990s.
"I was looking for a career change and wanted to make a living creating
art," he says.
At the time he was a scientist, and while one may consider it unusual for
a scientist to pursue art, Simmons sees both as "process driven disciplines."
Today as a full-time artist, his hand-blown glass pieces originate with an
idea. "It can be something I see — a flower, a fish or a
dance performance, Simmons says. "Sometimes I wake up with an image in
my mind."
During the glass blowing process, bits of molten colored glass are blended
into a globule on the end of his blowpipe. Then clear glass is gathered over
the piece, blown out and shaped. In another method, he picks up colored canes, murini or
shards of colored glass on the side of the hot bubble as it is blown.
Simmons, whose studio is located in Belleville, says, "Donating my work
is one way I can support Wisconsin Public Television."
