POSITION SUMMARY
This position will lead Wisconsin Public Television’s on-line efforts, including articulating the vision for WPT’s on-line services, and creating the road map for success. It requires substantial cooperation and coordination with those working on the technical and other aspects of WPT’s online service and content. WPT’s online presence is an essential component of its identity and service to the public. While the Web serves all units of Wisconsin Public Television, it is becoming more important as a distinct channel for content—video, audio, blogs and other resources—produced directly for online environments. Increased emphasis is being placed on interactivity and online platforms are a critical element in multi-channel fundraising. The Online Manager reports to the Communications Director.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Plan.
a. Develop short and long-range plans for WPT’s Online services in consultation with WPT colleagues and senior staff. Stay current with on-line trends and technology as they relate to WPT’s mission and services.
b. Monitor progress toward achievement of strategic and creative goals. Report regularly to supervisor and WPT leadership.
c. Work with web leaders at Wisconsin Public Radio and the Educational Communications Board to implement common content platforms and shared content which advance the service goals of the partner organizations. Co-chair the Integrated Media Team.
Manage.
d. Consult with staff, colleagues and project partners on a wide range of online activities to clearly define objectives, expectations and specifications.
e. Establish and monitor timelines.
f. Regularly report progress to clients partners, and others.
g. Assign and evaluate the work of staff including database specialists, Web developers, designers and content specialists. These staff are within the online unit and in other units throughout the organization.
h. Hire freelancers in response to creative and technical needs and budgets.
i. Ensure that brand identity standards are understood and met, collaborating with design staff.
j. Develop and implement systems for search engine optimization, site accessibility, and Web documentation.
k. Coordinate service delivery through the University of Wisconsin-Extension and third-party providers.
l. Work productively and successfully with diverse, multicultural people and groups
Consult.
m. Monitor emerging trends in online design, systems, applications and consumer behaviors. Consult and collaborate with colleagues on opportunities, best practices and implementation.
n. Evaluate tools, technologies and services—in-house and external—to help meet strategic and creative goals. Recommend solutions to clients, partners and managers.
o. Develop training plans for staff in the Online Unit.
Measure.
p. Develop metrics for online sites, pages and services for evaluation and decision making about impacts and return on investment.
q. Report regularly on progress toward established benchmarks.
Supervise.
r. Supervise staff of three full-time and one part-time staff assigned to the Online Unit. Establish annual goals and give regular feedback. Conduct annual performance evaluations.
s. Supervise the work of three to four other staff assigned in part to the Online Unit. Contribute to annual goals and evaluations in consultation with their primary supervisors.
t. On occasion, provide hands-on services as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• User-oriented sensibility that leads to appealing, easy-to-use Online sites and features.
• Ability to effectively use and/or direct the use of a variety of Web and other software, including Content Management Systems; programs such as Dreamweaver, Graphic, Audio and Video editing software; and languages such as HTML and more.
• Skills, confidence and demeanor to productively lead staff across departmental lines.
• Ability to work non-standard hours in support of major activities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s Degree plus three to five years of full-time equivalent job-related experience.
2. Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
3. High commitment to quality customer service.
4. Demonstrated success in developing Web sites and applications with a high degree of usability.
5. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage groups of diverse professionals in large-scale Online projects.
6. Highly developed problem-solving skills.
7. Knowledge of Windows and Apple computers and systems.
8. Commitment to diversity in workplace and online environments including W3C Web accessibility standards.
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1. Strategic and imaginative approach to integrating Online efforts into a broader enterprise.
2. Experience implementing consistent brand identity in online materials.
3. Knowledge of public media and their Web services.
SALARY
The range for this position is mid-$50,000s to upper-$60,000s with actual pay dependent upon skills and experience. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
